I'm watching the David Tennant/Catherine Tate Much Ado About Nothing (it's on YouTube!) and I suddenly noticed something. When you take out all the insults and sex jokes, their first exchange goes something like this:
"So . . . you dating anyone?"
"What, me? No, no. Why?"
"No, no reason, that's good. Not that I care if you're dating anyone. Nobody should date you. You're the worst. . . . I'm not dating anyone, by the way."
"Pfffft. I don't care. Lucky people who aren't dating you, because you're also the worst. . . . I'm not planning on dating anyone else right now, BTW."
"Pffft. I don't care."
This has been my favorite play since I was a teenager and I'm just now noticing this. Shakespeare, you wily bastard.
