"Miss? I dropped the ants and they got out."

It transpired that this smol child had a smol ant farm that had come to grief. It was basically a jar with a lid that popped off ludicrously easily with some dirt and some twigs and some - yikes - ants.

We recovered two of them. I am telling myself that there were only two in the container and ignoring all other possibilities.

I'll be traveling next weekend so you may or may not get one of these. Buuuuut anyway.

I was poking around my drafts recently and found this, and decided to finish it. I wrote most of this long before we learned that Caitlin’s birthday is in February. So please handwave as hard as you can and pretend that Central City is having an unreasonably warm early spring. Or maybe that it’s a more southern city than we thought. Both is good.

The Qualifications for a Date

Cisco hopped out of the breach and took the sidewalk at just shy of a run. He was late, which should be impossible for someone who could take the back way through dimensions and cover miles like walking from one room to another. But that just seemed to make it easier to procrastinate. Latino time found a way, apparently.

His phone notified him that his destination was on the right, and he looked up. He froze on the sidewalk and swore at himself.

He’d heard this place was fancy. Caitlin had told him this place was fancy. But he’d thought fancy meant pulling out his nicest sportcoat, ironing his slacks, and spending extra time on his hair.

There were guys walking in the door who were straight-up wearing tuxes. And the women were wearing the most gorgeous dresses. Like they’d come for dinner before going to the opera or the symphony or -

He looked down at himself, then rubbed his hand over his face. “Okay, fine, whatever,” he said into his palm. “Caitlin doesn’t care. She picked this place. If she’d thought you needed a tux, she would’ve said so. It’s fine.”

He was just standing here being a coward because when he’d opened his mouth to say, “I’d really like to take you out on a date, which I know might be a little weird because we’ve been friends for most of a decade but I just can’t stop thinking about it lately, about kissing you and holding your hand and seeing you smile just for me.”

… he’d said, “hey, you, where am I taking you for your birthday?”

Coward.

Cassian squirmed against the rough tree trunk, trying to scratch the part of his back that he couldn’t reach on his own. “This is not funny,” he mumbled.

“No, it’s hilarious,” Jyn said. “Captain Super Spy, brought low by a plant.”

Kay said sternly, “Didn’t you read the planet briefing, Cassian? There was specific mention of human reactions to the secretions of the hawdot vine.”

“Yes,” he said. “I read it.”

Jyn raised her brows and kept rummaging in their medkit. “So you plopped your sniper’s nest right in the middle of a bed of vines that most humans are mildly allergic to because …”

“It was a very good spot.”

“Not the only one,” Kay said. “I identified three more that would have served just as well, without botanical irritants.”

“And well, I might not have read all of that part of the briefing,” he admitted. “Which is my fault, I admit. I got - ” He glanced at Jyn. “Distracted.”

Distracted was one word for it. Seduced was another.

Prompt: Cuddling in a blanket fort

Big Enough for Two

Cassian put his hand on the lock, paused, and rubbed his hand over his face.

They’d had a fight this morning. Not about anything big. Just a stupid hissing spat over the way she couldn’t ever seem to put her damn socks in the damn laundry, it was two feet away, Force’s sake.

And she’d snarled back, It’s socks, I’ll get them in a moment, would you unclench?

It had ended in Huttese curses and slammed doors and people getting out of his way very quickly in the halls all day.

It hadn’t been really about socks though.

He keyed in his code and wasn’t entirely surprised to see the light on and Jyn cross legged on the bed, bundled in an extra blanket and chewing on a stylus as she read something on a datapad. She lifted her head at the sound of the door opening, but didn’t say anything until it shut again.

Then she said in a subdued voice, “I tidied up.”

He looked around. All the stray socks that had littered the floor were piled in the laundry basket. The cups with tea leaves frozen to the bottom had been removed. The flimsi scattered over the desk were all stacked up. She’d even sort of straightened up her guns, lined up on a shelf carved into the wall.

He rested back against the door. “I’m sorry,” he said. “I woke up in a bad mood. But I shouldn’t have taken it out on you.”

She shrugged. “S’not like I’m always a ray of sunshine either.”

He shook his head. “Jyn. Please. I shouldn’t have - ”

“It was the anniversary, wasn’t it?”

Hits the Spot

Caitlin sat on the curb, rubbing at the blood on her leg. Frost had healed her right up, but she could still feel the lingering soreness - and of course, the shredded material of her pants and shirt wasn’t something a hypermetabolism could fix. “Dammit, Frost,” she said under her breath.

It wasn’t my idea, Frost snarked back. Where are those calories?

She huffed out a breath and stared across the street. Her stomach cramped with hunger, and she gripped her knees hard to stop knees and hands both from shaking. Just like Barry’s, her healing factor burned through a lot of calories when it got to work, and she always needed to eat something sugary if she didn’t want to suffer a hypoglycemic crash afterwards.

She hadn’t wanted to go into The Sweet Spot like this, though. She looked like she’d been in a fight with a lawnmower, which was close to the truth. Someone would call the police, and not every beat cop had fond memories of Frost.

For the thousandth time, she reflected that she should probably start carrying mints or butterscotch candies or something in her pocket. Maybe dextrose tablets. But then she’d miss out on post-fight desserts with Cisco.

Pep Talk

The click-click of Caitlin’s heels sounded like gunshots on the wooden floors of their apartment. Cisco ventured warily into the living room to find her powering between one notebook and another, her phone in one hand, muttering to herself about catering and the band and the cake.

She was dressed to the nines in a red lace dress, fancy jewelry glittering, makeup flawless, her hair done up all sleek twist. In spite of all that, she still looked frazzled.

He cleared his throat. “Uh, babe?“

Her head snapped up. "What?”

He held out the two ends of the silk tie around his neck. “Help,” he said humbly.

“Your tie?”

He widened his eyes at her. “I’m all butterfingers this morning.“

She let out a sigh and crossed the room to take the tie in her hands. Her perfume drifted around them, sweet and subtle. She scowled at the tie as if she were building a nuclear reactor in her head, but her shoulders and her lips softened until she only looked about half as tense.

I collect Funko Pops and the sequel versions of Leia have been on my list for awhile. Today, I found not one but two of them on my jaunt to the shops.


I can only conclude SpaceMom is reminding me to be a badass right now.
