It's been awhile since I did one of these. Not because I'm not reading, but because I kept putting it off. But it's been a month now! I'm going to skip the art recs this time around, not because I didn't see any good art, but because my fic list is going to be quite long enough. In fact, it's so long that I'm splitting this into two parts. Watch for the next part sometime this week, because I'm realistic.

All Dressed Up (and no place to go)

The breach whiffed closed and they both staggered toward her couch. “Ughhhhhh,” Cisco groaned, dropping his tux jacket and collapsing onto the cushions. “What a night.”

Caitlin was holding her shoes, and tossed them away without looking to see where they landed. “Why do they never come quietly,” she asked the ceiling. “If they’d just come quietly, we all could have been home three hours ago.”

“And that dress might not be torn.”

She made a mournful face. “I was trying not to think about that.” She looked down at the ripped seam that flapped sadly open, revealing a stretch of thigh. “I really like this dress, too.” She tugged at the ripped edges, turning them to inspect the damage.

“So?” he asked after a moment. “Is the patient going to make it?”

She glanced up at him, the sparkle in her eye that preceded one of her very, very bad jokes. “Well, I think it’ll require stitches.”  

He busted out laughing, and she laughed with him, much harder than the terrible joke deserved, but what they needed after their evening.

“God, what a night,” he sighed when they’d laughed themselves breathless, leaning into each other for support. “Why do we never get prettied up and go out unless we’re undercover?”

For hedgiwithapen  on Tumblr, who asked me for a story involving “comfort after nightmare”

The Important Part

The cortex was 3 am quiet, the only sounds the clicking of her computer keys and the soft, deep breathing of the man in the bed. Caitlin had kicked off her shoes and pulled her hair into a loose braid to keep it out of her way as she worked, drinking lukewarm coffee to keep herself awake.

Not that what she was working on was so very important. Her priority, more than usual, was her patient.

The first sound of distress brought her up out of her chair and over to the bed. “Cisco,” she said. “Cisco, it’s okay. Can you hear me? Wake up. It’s okay. You’re dreaming.”

They’d spent the past week in cross-dimensional pursuit of a meta who used fear toxin on his victims. The Scarecrow was safely in Iron Heights now, but Cisco had gotten a faceful of the stuff. Even though they had an antidote on hand, Batwoman had said regretfully that the aftereffects would linger for about a day.

The aftereffects proved to be intense drowsiness, and when Cisco did fall asleep, awful nightmares.

Who Am I to Disagree

The last thing Cisco did before turning in was to call Caitlin.

“Hey,” she said when she answered the phone. “Are you back in Central City? Did you go right home? I wouldn’t blame you, it’s awfully late.”

“No and no,” he said, turning his music down and twirling his chair so she could see the Tannhauser lab spinning along in his background. “Just wanted to let you know I’m sleeping up here tonight. There’s a test that I need to check at fuck o'clock in the morning.”

She nodded. In addition to the lab, there were living quarters here. Well of course, there had to be - Snow Job hadn’t spent all his time pretending to create a cure for himself. Since starting work on their own cure, they’d each spent their fair share of nights in this lab, under piles of blankets.

“We might cross paths tomorrow morning,” she said. “I’m using the gidget and coming up there first thing with some more samples.”

“It’s not a - ” he started, and gave up. Caitlin thought interpolator was a nonsense word for the device that created breaches without his help, and called it everything but that just to tease him. “Okay, fine. See you then.”

She grinned at him. “Play your cards right and I might bring you waffles.”

“You do know the way to my heart,” he said. “You’re hitting the hay soon, too, right? No all nighters, now.”

“I’m just about to change for bed,” she said.

“Okay. Sweet dreams.”

“You too.”

Cisco pulled off his glasses and pinched the bridge of his nose. He’d been hunched over his keyboard for the last hour, swearing under his breath and trying to remember the website passwords for the mortgage company and their health insurance.

“How’s it going?” Caitlin asked, coming in the room and leaning on the corner of his desk.

He looked at the computer screen. “Terrible. Look at that.”

She leaned over his shoulder and winced. “Oh, we owed a lot, didn’t we?”

“Yeah, I’m thinking we should bump up our estimated tax payments this year. Ugggggggggh.” He threw his glasses down. “Would you listen to me? That was so boring I almost fell asleep in the middle of that sentence.”

She kissed his cheek. “I’m very proud of you.”

He narrowed his eyes at her. “You sure you didn’t cheat?”

I was poking around my drafts recently and found this, and decided to finish it. I wrote most of this long before we learned that Caitlin’s birthday is in February. So please handwave as hard as you can and pretend that Central City is having an unreasonably warm early spring. Or maybe that it’s a more southern city than we thought. Both is good.

The Qualifications for a Date

Cisco hopped out of the breach and took the sidewalk at just shy of a run. He was late, which should be impossible for someone who could take the back way through dimensions and cover miles like walking from one room to another. But that just seemed to make it easier to procrastinate. Latino time found a way, apparently.

His phone notified him that his destination was on the right, and he looked up. He froze on the sidewalk and swore at himself.

He’d heard this place was fancy. Caitlin had told him this place was fancy. But he’d thought fancy meant pulling out his nicest sportcoat, ironing his slacks, and spending extra time on his hair.

There were guys walking in the door who were straight-up wearing tuxes. And the women were wearing the most gorgeous dresses. Like they’d come for dinner before going to the opera or the symphony or -

He looked down at himself, then rubbed his hand over his face. “Okay, fine, whatever,” he said into his palm. “Caitlin doesn’t care. She picked this place. If she’d thought you needed a tux, she would’ve said so. It’s fine.”

He was just standing here being a coward because when he’d opened his mouth to say, “I’d really like to take you out on a date, which I know might be a little weird because we’ve been friends for most of a decade but I just can’t stop thinking about it lately, about kissing you and holding your hand and seeing you smile just for me.”

… he’d said, “hey, you, where am I taking you for your birthday?”

Coward.
